Local civil rights activists are heated over the arrest of Kerry Lathan, one of the three men who was wounded during the shooting where Nipsey Hussle was killed.
He’d just been released after serving 20 years in prison and was reportedly arrested afterward.
Lathan was visiting Hussle’s Marathon store in Crenshaw to pick up some new clothes. However, after the tragic shooting cops said he violated his parole by being around gang members, so he was arrested.
People are trying to do everything they can to help Lathan. A GoFund me account has been set up to help cover his medical expenses as he’s now bound to a wheel chair. It’s also to help Lathan have money once he is released. In the meantime, activists are now calling on Gov. Gavin Newsom to demand the release Lathan.
“That’s a slap in the face to his family and our grieving community,” said Najee Ali, director of Project Islamic Hope. “Nipsey Hussle was a hero, a role model, a justification fighter, a successful business person and entrepreneur who gave everything he could to help people in this community. That help included trying to help his friend Lathan. We can’t continue to have this cycle of criminal justice system that penalizes people who need help.”
