Facing accusations that a balaclava-style sweater available on its online shop and physical stores evoked blackface, Gucci issued a statement on Thursday through its Twitter account.
Gucci debuted its new wool balaclava jumper but the piece conjured up images of the minstrelsy and blackface. To make matters worse, the jumper was modeled by a white woman.
Gucci issued a statement after much backlash from the item, writing in part:
Gucci deeply apologizes for the offense caused by the wool balaclava jumper. We consider diversity to be a fundamental value to be fully upheld, respected, and at the forefront of every decision we make.
