Former U.S. Figure Skater John Coughlin Dies of Apparent Suicide …

Former U.S. figure skater John Coughlin committed suicide, his sister announced on Friday night. He was 33.

Coughlin’s sister announced her brother’s passing on Facebook, writing, “My wonderful, strong, amazingly compassionate brother John Coughlin took his own life earlier today. I have no words. I love you John. Always Always Brother Bear.”

He had been placed on interim suspension by the U.S. Center for SafeSport one day prior over unspecified allegations. He was initially restricted from participating in figure skating events as of December 17, 2018.

Coughlin told USA Today in January that the allegations against him were “unfounded” but he was unable to speak about the specifics of the case while it was still pending.

Coughlin won the U.S. championship in 2011 with partner Caitlin Yankowskas and in 2012 he with Caydee Denney.

U.S. Figure Skating issued a statement on Saturday, saying, “We are stunned at the news of the death of two-time U.S. pairs champion John Coughlin. Our heartfelt and deepest sympathies are with his father Mike, sister Angela and the rest of his family. Out of respect to the family, we will have no further comment until a later time.”
