Houston Texans wide receiver DeAndre Hopkins says he will donate his football playoff check to the family of Jazmine Barnes.
Hopkins posted to Twitter Thursday morning saying he’s pledging his check to help the family with funeral costs and to support local law enforcement in finding the suspect in the case.
Jazmine Barnes was killed early Sunday morning when a man in a red pickup truck pulled up next to the family’s car and opened fire for no apparent reason. The family was going on an early morning coffee run at the time of the incident. Jazmine’s mother, LaPorsha Washington, who was also in the truck during the attack, was struck in the face but managed to survive. Jazmine’s 3 sisters were also in the car during the shooting and suffered cuts from shattered glass.
The suspect who has been described as a white man with a beard who appears to be in his 40s has not been caught yet. A manhunt is now underway in Texas. While the family along with world desperately waits for the man to be captured, many people have been sending messages and prayers to them as they deal with the loss of their loved one.
NFL star DeAndre Hopkins, who was also devastated by the news is making a big move to help the victim’s mother and sisters out. The wide receiver says he is donating his playoff check to the family. He says every penny from his NFL Wild Card round playoff paycheck will go straight to them.
The sad story definitely resonated with Hopkins. He said in an Instagram post,
“When I see Jazmine Barnes’ face, I see my own daughter”
Shaun King, the social activist announced that a $100,000 reward is being offered for info that leads to the arrest of the killer.
