Sources tell Gigionthat.com that the filmmaker behind Marvel’s landmark Black Panther has quietly closed a deal to write and direct the sequel.
While the move was expected — Marvel wanted to keep the creative team as intact as possible and a sequel was never in any real doubt — the timing was always unclear.
The film’s director Ryan Coogler has been hounded with questions about a part two since the film’s original debuted back in February.
Unlike most film directors, Coogler took his time to let the excitement of the first film sink in before answering any questions about a second half even though fans already knew the deal.
Hollywood Reporter says that the deal for Coogler to write and direct the second film has been signed for quite some time, but Marvel and Coogler’s team have been keeping things on the low!
With its early year release, “Black Panther” grossed $700 million domestically and more than $1.3 billion worldwide. Through major success, the film was considered a contender for an Oscar. This movie became a major defining cultural moment and touchstone, especially for the black community.
Sources say at this time, Coogler has plans to start working on the script next year with an idea to start production in either late 2019 or early 2020.
I can’t wait to see what is next for the world of Wakanda and the Black Panther.
