Arrest Made in Murder of Former NBA Player Lorenzen Wright

Authorities charged a man Tuesday in connection with the slaying of former NBA player Lorenzen Wright, more than seven years after Wright’s bullet-riddled body was found decomposing in a Tennessee suburb.

From playing college ball, Wright’s dreams came true as he played professionally for Los Angeles Clippers and Memphis Grizzlies. During his NBA career, Wright faced some personal challenges as he endured a divorce. In addition, Wright faced some financial challenges as two of his homes were foreclosed. His NBA career ended in 2009 and sadly, he was killed a year later at the young age of 34.

Lorenzen Wright was living in Atlanta but he decided to visit his hometown of Memphis in July of 2010. According to Commercial Appeal, his former wife, Sherra Wright, told police officers that Lorenzen allegedly left her Collierville home on July 18th with drugs and an undisclosed amount of money. His former wife claims she overheard Lorenzen possibly discussing a drug deal as he allegedly said that he was going to flip something for $110,000. Sherra Wright said Lorenzen Wright left her home in a car with a person she could not identify. According to police records, Sherra Wright gave the statements to police on July 27th, nine days after he left her house for the last time. Wright’s mother filed a missing-person report with Collierville police on July 22, 2010.

Interestingly enough, in the early morning of July 19, a police dispatcher in the suburb of Germantown received a call from Wright’s cellphone. Dispatchers acknowledged they heard noises like gunshots before the call was dropped. His body was found in the area several days later, and authorities have said it was so badly decomposed that it was unclear how many times he was shot. Now, years later, Memphis police officers have arrested and charged Billy Turner with first-degree murder in the 2010 killing of former NBA player Lorenzen Wright. Turner was arrested nearly a month after authorities announced that they recovered the gun used to kill Wright from a lake in Walnut, Miss.

Deborah Marion, Wright’s mother, never stopped praying and she was elatedover Tuesday’s developments, saying authorities confirmed Turner’s arrest shortly before a mid-afternoon news conference.

I’m ecstatic. I’m full of flame, Marion said, later adding: We got the main player.

Something tells me that more arrests will be made as Turner allegedly was the shooter but who orchestrated the crime? Wright’s mother stated that she has often thought of several suspects who could be responsible but she reportedly has never heard of Turner. Who is Billy Turner and why would he want Lorenzen Wright? Hopefully, we’ll know more as this is an ongoing investigation.
